Canon Toner Cartridges
Due to a global microchip shortage, Canon will begin shipping toner cartridges with no sensor chips. This will not affect the quality of your prints but may cause an error message to appear while adding a new toner cartridge.
There is no issue with using this toner. It will not harm your machine and will not produce lower quality prints. However, some machines will give a message saying that the "wrong item is inserted" and "toner information cannot be detected properly.” The screen may differ depending on the model of your machine, but select either Close, I Agree or OK.
Note: In some cases, firmware software may have been updated and you will not see a message when loading the new toner cartridge.
Canon Toner FAQs
Who is affected by this shortage?
The chip-less toner cartridges are for certain models of Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE and imageRUNNER series multifunctional printers (MFP) only. Ink cartridges for inkjet printers and toner cartridges for laser printers are not affected. Also, imagePRESS devices are not included, since they use a bar code and not a chip.
How will I know if I have a chip-less toner cartridge?
The cartridges without chips will have the following label. When installed into your printer, you will receive an error message, as described above.
Will these toner cartridges still print? Is it safe to use? Will using the chip-less toner void my warranty?
These cartridges are perfectly safe to use. Once the error message is cleared, your printer will work as it always has. These cartridges are manufactured by Canon and will not void any warranty.
How will chip-less toner cartridges affect the functioning of my printer?
With no chip installed, the machine will not be able to monitor toner usage. The toner level will read 100% or OK until it begins to run low. When toner begins to run low, the machine will report "0%", "Empty" or "None.” At that point you will still have 500 to 1,000 prints left in the cartridge. You will need to order a replacement but can still print.
Should I stock up now?
You do not need to stock up on toner. There is no shortage of ink or toner and Canon will begin manufacturing cartridges with chips as soon as microchip supplies are available again.
