What is a Hyperconverged Infrastructure and Is It Right for my Business?

Is your technology infrastructure holding you back? When you look at your IT budget for the coming year, do you want to scream? Hyperconvergence might be the answer.

A hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) offers benefits like simpler deployments and management, but also better reliability, scalability and security. That's not to say HCI is for everyone, but for the right workloads, HCI can prove a useful addition to the data center or edge environment, reducing costs and simplifying IT.

If you don’t believe us, check out these stories from real HCI customers to see what the technology can do for you.

HCI CONTROLS COSTS

As the sole IT employee for the City of Pewaukee, IT Director Bobby Kewan needed to update the city’s network infrastructure at a cost that fit its limited IT budget. The city’s SAN began running out of space and needed to be upgraded along with the hypervisor and host servers. However, the $150,000 price tag to replace them was impossibly expensive. “My equipment was aging and starting to fail. I was struggling to come up with the money in my tight annual budget to pay for what was going to be very expensive replacements. I needed a solution I could not only depend on but also afford,” says Kewan.

After a thorough network assessment, Elevity recommended the Scale Computing hyperconverged platform. It allowed the city to upgrade and expand their virtual environment for less than half the cost of going through other vendors. Scale Computing was also faster and easier to use than the city’s previous system. Now he can add more space to a server in less than 10 minutes. Vital city services now run on an upgraded platform that will serve the city dependably for years to come.

HCI STANDARDIZES YOUR TECHNOLOGY

Founded in 1906, the National University of Health Sciences (NUHS) is a leader in career training for health care. Unfortunately, the NUHS organization had a patchwork of systems in need of updates.

Outdated and non-uniform software created a poor user experience and overwhelmed the NUHS IT staff. The university also had difficulties adopting new technologies and integrating them with their existing software. Elevity offered NUHS a customized solution that could be standardized across campuses. The software could also be updated and monitored remotely, and the new solution integrated seamlessly with existing programs.

The customized solution offered NUHS a hybrid IT environment that easily integrated with existing personnel and systems. It is a user-friendly system that can be used across campuses, software updates occur regularly, and workstations are more secure. The software also has easy-to-use reporting tools so officials have more knowledge and information available about their systems.

HCI UPGRADES IT PERFORMANCE

The New Resources Consulting (NRC) organization is an information technology provider based in Milwaukee, WI. NRC specializes in providing Oracle and PeopleSoft deployments for SMBs and Enterprise businesses alike. They also provide municipal services to clients in all major time zones of the country.

When the current Network/System Administrator, Chris Hippensteel, joined the organization, NRC was running an outdated and jam-packed system. The aging servers were starting to fail constantly, and he had little time for anything but daily repairs. What is worse, he was working 80+ hours a week just trying to keep the massive platform afloat, cancelling plans with friends and family to make sure the network was running and secure. “When I joined NRC, the technology infrastructure was failing rapidly. I was putting Band-Aids on everything from improperly running back-ups to inefficient SANs,” says Hippensteel

Nearly a year into their Nutanix migration, almost 95% of NRC’s production and development now runs on Nutanix. Back-ups that previously took three days are now completed in less than 24 hours. Key back-ups take just 2 hours compared to full weekends on the old infrastructure. NRC has also reduced the total number of servers from 163 to just 77. Migrating to Nutanix has allowed Chris to get out of “fix-it mode” and be able to focus on other strategic IT initiatives and forward planning.
