Cal’s All-Star Angel Foundation, Inc.
Tom and Stacey Sutter created Cal’s All-Star Angel Foundation in memory of their oldest child Cal who died of leukemia in 2006. Less than four years ago, their lives changed forever when Cal, then a 12-year old South Elgin Little League All-Star, was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. Like many children, Cal never gave up hope, and through it all he was always more concerned about the well being of the other children fighting cancer than he was about himself. The courage he displayed throughout his illness inspired them to start Cal’s All-Star Angel Foundation. The mission and purpose – granting wishes and providing financial assistance to kids fighting cancer and their families – continues Cal’s legacy of always caring about others above anything else.
In less than two years, generous donors and supporters have enabled the Sutters to bring unbelievable amounts of hope and support to more than 50 pediatric cancer patients and their families. Recent wishes and assistance include: shopping sprees at Cabela’s, Best Buy and Dell on-line; a family outing to the Barnum & Bailey Circus and Sea World; Wii and PS3 systems with games; tickets to a Cubs game with pre-game time on the field; numerous Gift Cards for groceries, prescriptions and clothing; countless mortgage, rent, car and utility bill payments; and over $10,000 in games, electronics and crafts for area hospitals.
This summer Cal’s All –Star Angel Foundation will help send teen cancer survivors on an outdoors expedition and camping trip. This experience is geared towards building confidence and social skills after years of cancer treatment that has left most of them isolated and out of touch with their peers. The Sutters have personally met many of the participants and report they are very excited to learn how to set up camp, cook outdoors, rock climb, rappel, kayak and participate in other team building activities with peers who have all been through the same life threatening ordeal of cancer treatment. The Expedition will be run by The Road Less Traveled, a company that educates youth to believe in themselves and their individual and collective abilities to shape the future by leading them on challenging, stimulating, mind and soul expanding journeys.
An award of $5000 will help fund this expedition for teen cancer survivors.
